LC Hosts Free Literacy Symposium for Professionals

In collaboration with Literacy Texas, LC invites educators, tutors, librarians, counselors, parent liaisons, higher education employees, and nonprofit professionals involved in adult and families.

Literacy Texas is a statewide initiative funded by various organizations that are interested in the future of Texans and their literacy levels. Literacy Texas encourages and incubates literacy groups throughout the state to increase their capacity through collaboration. They provide leadership to community organizations providing literacy services, literacy coalitions, and adult education programs statewide to build capacity and improve literacy levels in Texas.

Professionals in the field will offer information on building literacy capacity in their communities and educate on the importance of literacy. Participants will significantly benefit from topics such as mental health from children to caregivers with literacy needs, adult literacy and guided pathways, U.S. citizenship and the intentionally trained professional, the impact of the development of workforce and education on the Texas economy and will conclude with a special panel on Employability and Workforce Skills.

Speakers include Texas Workforce Commission Labor Commissioner Julian Alvarez III, SCAN consultant San Juanita Guerra, and LC Educational and Career Development Coordinator/USCIS Project Manager Eduardo Martinez.

“Laredo College is delighted to host the Laredo Literacy Symposium,” said Dean of Community Education Sandra Cortez. “Through adult literacy, we can build resilience within our community. We want to share information with educators on how to improve people’s lives. We invite everyone who teaches in our community to learn about important topics. »

To build resilience through literacy, our institution has partnered with this fantastic organization to offer the classes completely free. Breakfast and lunch will be served. Registration is ongoing, for more information please call 956-794-4002.
